Texas A&M University cadets with Ocean University of China National Defense basketball team following the basketball match

From May 19-30, 2011, twenty-four Texas A&M University cadets traveled to China and Taiwan to participate in the 2011 Corps of Cadets International Excursion-East Asia program. Through this high-impact international learning experience, the cadets were afforded the opportunity to visit key cultural sites in the cities of Beijing, Qingdao and Taipei, and to participate in briefings and lectures from key US and Chinese military and government leaders, academics and journalists.

Led by Professor Qingyun Wang, a visiting scholar who teaches within the Chinese program at Texas A&M, the class covered the basics of communicating in Chinese from basic greetings to phrases used while shopping.

The delegation of four included Zhou Zhichang, a Hanban Program Officer, Guo Lingli, a Chinese teacher at the Second High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, Wang Shuhong, a professor at Remin University in Beijing and Lu Shaojun, a Master of Martial Arts at Beijing Sports University.

Hanban's Chinese Language and Culture Delegation made its way through Navasota this week, visiting four campuses Monday. The tour aims to enhance the promotion of the Chinese language and culture among schools in Texas. The delegation, working through the Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University, provided students an introduction to Chinese culture and a sampling of martial arts, calligraphy, and traditional painting. The tour visited High Point Elementary, Navasota High School, Navasota Intermediate School, and Navasota Junior High School.

Chinese Culture Shines on the 4th Brazos Valley Worldfest ---- CI at Texas A&M University Brought Chinese Language and Culture Exhibit to Local World Expo

On Nov.13th, 2010, the Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University brought an engaging Chinese language and culture exhibit to the 4th Brazos Valley Worldfest.

The CI booth was largely popular among the children attending Worldfest because of the zodiac temporary tattoos that the booth offered. From 10 am to 5 pm, there was a constant flow of both children and parents, waiting in line to get Chinese Zodiac charts and a Chinese zodiac or Beijing Opera mask temporary tattoo applied to their faces and hands. Hundreds of CI temporary tattoos were given away.

  (北京综合讯)昨天是中国古代先贤孔子诞辰2561周年纪念日,中国各地举行纪念活动,首都北京也举行自1949年以来的首次祭孔大典。北京大学、清华大学等校的四名学者日前联合发出倡议,希望将孔子的诞辰日,也就是每年的9月28日设定为“尊师日”。

  据报道,两岸的师生联合祭孔大典仪式昨天上午在位于北京东城区国子监街的国子监孔庙举行,来自台湾和北京的两岸师生共计500人,共同祭奠孔子,弘扬中华传统文化。

   1949年后,虽然台湾一直未中断尊孔、祭孔,在中国大陆,孔子却因为被视为封建文化代表人物而遭中共当局禁止一切的祭祀、纪念活动,一直到上世纪90 年代,孔子故里山东曲阜才恢复举行祭孔大典,中国大陆政府近年更在海外大建开展汉语教学为主要活动内容的“孔子学院”,但作为首都的北京在昨天以前从未举 行类似的仪式。

  法新社说,北京孔庙昨天举行的两岸师生联合祭孔大典保安森严,只对媒体开放,却禁止公众参与。

  穿上传统礼服的年轻志愿者——主要是北京人民大学的学生——在陪祭官的引导下,在大成殿上行四拜礼与祭孔仪式,重现了西周以来的古老祭祀文化。

  北京孔庙建于1302年,是曲阜以外最大的孔庙。

College Station, Texas – The Confucius Institute and the Office for International Outreach at Texas A&M University hosted the 2010 Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA) Annual Conference on August 28th, 2010 at the George Bush Presidential Complex Annenberg Presidential Conference Center. The conference was a one day event intended to provide professional development on learning and assessment primarily for teachers of Mandarin Chinese. Ninety teachers, professors and administrators from various schools and universities throughout the state of Texas attended the conference.

Enrollment has started for the Fall Community Mandarin Chinese Class offered by the Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University. The Mandarin class is a noncredit bearing class designed to provide a basic introduction to the Mandarin language. The 4th China–U.S. Relations Conference, “Looking Ahead After 30 Years,” was held from October 21st to October 23rd in Beijing, to honor the 30th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic relationship. Texas A&M University has partnered with the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation to co-sponsor and organize four China-U.S. Relations Conferences since 2003. Harvard expert on Chinese poetry visits Confucius Institute

College Station, TX - Dr. Stephen Owen, James Bryant Conant Professor at Harvard University and an expert on classical Chinese poetry, delivered a public lecture exploring the political and social fabric of ancient China through the capital city, Chang’ an. Confucius Institute Expands Distance Education Program and Language Curriculum Support

The Confucius Institute at Texas A&M continues to expand the distance education Chinese language pilot program established with the cooperation of ESC Region VI in August of 2008. The program utilizes faculty from the CI-TAMU delivers Chinese language classes to high school students in three school districts via video conference and began with some 50 ninth and tenth grade students at Navasota, New Caney, and Splendora high schools.

Six representatives of the Confucius Institute at Texas A&M attended the Annual Conference for the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Texas, or CLTA, held in San Antonio. Dr. Yirong Luo, Ms.. Ying Wang, Dr. Yanfei Wang, Mr. Weidong Shi, Ms. Yuan Liu, and Mrs. Martha Green attended the one-day conference that was sponsored in part by the Confucius Institute at Texas A&M.

Confucius Institute welcomes visiting scholars

The Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University welcomed Dr. Yirong Luo, Dr. Wang Yanfei, and Ms. Yuan Liu, three long-term visiting scholars from Qingdao, China. Dr. Yirong Luo and Dr. Wang Yanfei are visiting scholars from Ocean University of China, the cooperative partner of Texas A&M University in the the Confucius Institute, and Ms. Yuan Liu is from the Qingdao University of Science and Technology.

Confucius Institute cosponsors Terracotta warriors VIP party

On August 13, 2009, the Institute for Pacific Asia and Confucius Institute staff members attended the VIP Party for museum members at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Despite a menacing thunderstorm and torrential rains in the Houston area hundreds of HMNS members turned out for the VIP access to the Terra Cotta Warriors, an exhibit cosponsored by IPA in conjunction with the Confucius Institute.

Confucius Institute Community Class a Hit

The Confucius Institute (CI) at Texas A&M has successfully concluded the second community-based introductory Chinese language and culture class offered by the institute. The non-credit course began on February 5 and attracted 42 participants from the communities of Bryan and College Station, an increase from the 38 that participated in the inaugural class during the fall semester.

Aggies volunteer in Chinese orphanage

A group of Texas Aggies traveling in China this summer spent several days with orphans in an area affected by the May 12, 2008 Sichuan Earthquake. The students were part of a study abroad program led by Dr. Antonio La Pastina of the Department of Communication that traveled to the economically challenged Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province, China.

Rural Texas High School Students Learn to Say 'Ni Hao'

American students have been learning to say hola and bonjour for years now, but recently, more and more are learning to say ni hao, the Chinese version of Howdy. Interest in learning Mandarin Chinese has surged in the United States as China has risen as a global and economic power. The U. S. Department of State considers Chinese to be an essential and critical language for U. S. national security and economic competitiveness.

Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University Organized Corps of Cadets International Excursion focuses on China

On May 19th, 10 members of the Corps of Cadets 2009-2010 leadership traveled to Beijing, Qingdao, Hong Kong, and Taipei, with a focus on strengthening the language and cultural competency of future military officers. The program was designed to give the cadets a greater understanding of the local culture, language, history economy and politics. Cadets commented that the excursion helped them to obtain “a real feel” for China’s major role in the world.

Stewart is a renowned scholar in the fields of religion and philosophy, and is currently a Templeton Visiting Scholar at Beijing University. He visited Texas A&M at the invitation of the Confucius Institute.

Robert Davis is director of the Confucius Institute in Chicago, which promotes Chinese language and culture and is housed in Walter Payton College Prep High School. It opened in 2006. The institute is a partnership between Chicago Public Schools' Office of Language and Cultural Education, the Chinese government's Office of Chinese Language Council International and East China Normal University in Shanghai, China.

On Saturday May 18, about 200 people from the campus and local communities attended a candlelight memorial and donation drive co-hosted by the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), the International Programs for Students (IPS) and the Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University (CI) to help the earthquake victims in Sichuan, China.

The donation drive on Texas A&M campus

An earthquake of magnitude 7.8, the worst to hit China in 30 years, hit Sichuan, China at 0228 CST (0728 GMT) on May 12, 2008. It was so powerful that people in a large part of China could feel it. Lots of aftershocks have affected the surrounding areas.

A large number of people have been affected by this tragedy. More than 14,000 deaths have already been recorded. The number of casualties is expected to rise continually. Homes, friends, families, and beloved ones have been lost.

Lunar Year Celebration on A&M Campus

COLLEGE STATION -- An afternoon full of festivities marked the celebration of the first day of the Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, at the A&M campus Thursday.

From Tai Chi demonstrations to lion and dragon dances, people gathered to learn about the most important celebration of the Chinese calendar.

This year is the year of the rat. Each year there is a head animal zodiac that's out of 12 animals. The Chinese New Year traditions include exchanging gifts and red envelopes symbolizing good fortune.

Confucius Institute brings Chinese Culture to the Brazos Valley Worldfest

The Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University helped to bring Chinese culture alive to participants in the Brazos Valley Worldfest on Saturday, November 17, 2007 in downtown Bryan. The worldfest was the culmination of the 2007 International Education Week and a year of planning by a community-wide group of volunteers under the leadership of the International Programs Office at Texas A&M University.
