This annual program, launched in the summer of 2006, brings school and district leaders to China for a one-week educational tour as guests of Hanban (Office of Chinese Language Council International) to learn about Chinese culture and language. Participants gather valuable knowledge and contacts to help them start a Chinese-language program. The Delegation provides an opportunity to:
- Meet with Chinese national and regional leaders.
- Visit schools and learn about the education system in China.
- Share ideas with other educators who are building Chinese programs in their schools.
- Meet Chinese education leaders and establish ties with sister schools and/or cities in China.
- Visit scenic and cultural sites to explore China's rich history.
- Learn about a country that is rapidly changing and rising on the global stage.
- Gain cultural knowledge and resources for your school and district.

June 23–July 1, 2008
Itinerary
The Delegation will spend the first few days in the Chinese capital of Beijing and then divide into smaller groups to travel to one or two regional cities. In each location, delegates will visit schools, meet with Chinese educators, see historic landmarks, and participate in cultural activities.
Cost to delegates
Delegates must pay a $900 non-refundable registration fee and are responsible for independent travel expenses to the designated U.S hub cities.
What is included?
The following costs are covered by the program:
- International round-trip air tickets to Beijing from designated U.S. hub cities (delegates will be assigned and notified of U.S. hub city for international departure; delegates cannot select the hub city or flights. )
- Travel costs in China, including hotel accommodations; group meals; tour guides and admission tickets; and local and inter-city transportation costs
- Chinese tourist visa fees
Who is eligible?
- District leaders (decision makers), school principals, and state, district, and school representatives who oversee foreign language learning
- Educators who did NOT participate in this program in 2006 or 2007
Multiple applications from the same institution will be accepted; however, priority will be given to the most senior applicants.
Priority will be given to secondary school leaders, although elementary school educators are welcome to apply.
All applications will be subject to review and approval.
Do I need a passport?
Yes! Delegates are required to have a valid passport with at least six (6) months validity from the date of departure (i.e. with an expiration date of December 23, 2008 or later). Proof of a valid passport will be required to confirm participation of selected applicants.

With a generous grant from the USED Fulbright-Hays GPA program,
Associated Colleges in China (ACC), in collaboration with Chinese
Language Teachers Association of Secondary Schools (CLASS), is
pleased to announce its first Summer K-12 Chinese Teachers Institute
to be held in Beijing and Chengdu, China during June 30-August 4,
2008 (including weekends). This six-week summer institute will
provide refresher language courses, cultural lectures, and
pedagogical workshops to K-12 in-service and pre-service Chinese
language teachers whose first language is not Chinese. Ten full
scholarships will be awarded to highly qualified participants to
attend the program.
PROGRAM FEATURES
- Six-week refresher Chinese language courses focusing on participants' language skills through a highly interactive and performance-based curriculum.
- A series of well organized cultural lectures and tours to expand participants' knowledge of Chinese culture.

Bi-weekly pedagogical workshops on National Foreign Language
Standards, K-12 curriculum design, best teaching practices, classroom
process, teaching needs of non-native CFL teachers, and assessment.
- Weekly experience sharing sessions, local school visit, hands-on teaching practicum, task design, lesson planning, and portfolio and test design.
- Authentic teaching material collection and development.
ELIGIBILITY
A citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States who is not a native Chinese speaker.
The current status qualifies at least one of the following:
- A Chinese language teacher in an elementary or secondary school in the US
- A graduate student or senior in an institution of higher education, who is a prospective teacher of Chinese language teachers or who has demonstrated a strong commitment to K-12 Chinese language education.
SCHOLARSHIPS
- Ten full scholarships available through a grant provided to ACC by the Fulbright-Hays GPA Program.
- International travel up to $1500, program tuition, in-country travel, and lodging in China will be covered.
