march 24 , 2009-SymposiuM on ancient chinese monotheism and ancient hebrew tardition
College Station, Texas, March 24, 2009 – Dr. Mel Stewart, Peking University will present a symposium on “Elements of Ancient Chinese Monotheism and the Ancient Hebrew
Tradition” on April 9 2009 at 3.00pm in Glasscock Library.
There are substantial and fairly clear interrelated descriptions of certain ancient Chinese ideas and practices which evidence monotheistic beliefs, and further that these practices and corresponding beliefs upon inspection bear significant analogous relationships to practices and beliefs belonging to the monotheism of ancient Israel. Stewarts lecture will focus on ancient condifications (as in the Shu Jing) some of which date back to the Xia Dynasty (2205-1766 B.C.), the writings of Confucius (551-479 B.C.), augmented by a select list of Chinese thinkers who comment on this period, and Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716), perhaps the most significant commentator on this topic representing Western philosophy.
Melville Y. Stewart is Professor of Philosophy Emeritus and Adjunct at Bethel University in Minnesota. He has a B.A. from Gordon College, an M. Div. from Westminster Theological Seminary, an S.T.M. from Andover Newton Theological School, an M.A. from the University of Connecticut, a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and he did post-doctoral work at Oxford in 1986. more
