Chinese Language Enrollment in Texas

Drawing upon data collected and provided by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), researchers at Texas A&M University’s Confucius Institute have been able to chart the growth of Chinese language education in the state.  Over the period of a decade and a half, Chinese language enrollment has grown by over 2000% during the period from 2000 to 2015 from fewer than 1000 students in 2000, concentrated in just a few districts, to almost 14,000 in 2015. Moreover, in 2000, only 5 districts in the state offered Chinese, while by 2014, this had grown to 48.  The report discusses some of the reasons behind the growth, as well as barriers to growth.
