The Confucius Institute at Texas A&M coordinates honorary degree ceremony for President George H. W.
College Station, Texas, April 24, 2009 –The Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University hosted a delegation from the University of Macau, who bestowed an honorary degree on President George Herbert Walker Bush for his long standing efforts to further U.S. –China relationships. The staff of the Confucius Institute coordinated the ceremony on behalf of the University of Macau, and hosted the delegation for a tour of Texas A&M University. The delegation also took part in the annual Aggie Muster, one of the most solemn ceremonies at Texas A&M University.
In recognizing President Bush for his long commitment to China, Rector Zhao Wei of the University of Macau said, “President George Bush has always been a leading figure on the world stage and has won high regard and deep respect from the Chinese people for his consistent and heartfelt endeavors to cultivate China-US relations.” The award comes on the thirtieth anniversary of the resumption of China-US diplomatic relations.
In remarks during the ceremony, President Bush noted “The United States must be engaged with China in the future. I have had the privilege of knowing many of China’s leaders, and I believe more than ever that the United States and China must work together.” Of the honorary degree, President Bush expressed his warm affection for the delegation from Macau and stated that he was “deeply honored by this significant recognition.” The ceremony took place at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.
Randy Kluver, director of the Confucius Institute at Texas A&M, stated, “part of the mission of the Confucius Institute is to be an instrument in building ties between China and the US. We are grateful that we were able to help facilitate this well deserved honor for President Bush for his strong effort in helping Americans to better understand China and the Chinese people.”
